Plymouth Yarn Company has been in business for just over 47 years and we’d like to introduce you to Betty, a fixture here since 1966. We thought it was time to honor our awesome octogenarian! Betty just celebrated her 87th birthday in May and we couldn’t be happier that she spent her day with us.
Betty is one of three sisters and moved to Pennsylvania from Buffalo, NY when she was 15. Betty was employed at The Hunter Arms Company during World War II, assembling parts for machine guns. She was married to her late husband Francis for 30 years and has one very talented son, Jack who is a local artist. You can see some of his paintings in one of the shops on Historic Mill Street, here in Bristol Borough.
Betty enjoys watching QVC, the Phillies, relaxing and cooking. Her favorite singer is Frank Sinatra. She loves her jewelry and is always wearing beautiful pieces.
Betty worked with us full time up until just a few years ago. When she started at Plymouth, she would sort and wind yarn, pull orders and you can still find her five days a week making color cards. She says that her least favorite job, of all the many she has done here, is using the yarn bailer. Her favorite part (and this is why we love her) is all the friends she has made, especially Gloria. She has always loved working for Dick Power Sr, Dick Power Jr and Butch. She enjoys her work here and says “it keeps me young.” Thank you to our “Betty Boop” for 45 years of dedication and friendship.
Lovely tribute post to longtime employee. Perhaps Betty would know the Plymouth yarn from the past I’m hoping is still produced.
It is Encore Colorspun worsted, color # 7021. More than 20 years ago, I bought it in a yarn store in Baltimore to make a vest–one I’m wearing as this is written. It has held up beautifully through a number of washings and button changes.
The color is beige and white, the surface/texture attractively bumpy (not sure how to describe accurately). When I look on this website, all the Colorspun worsted appears smooth-textured.
It would be wonderful to find the same yarn in other colors.
Here’s hoping Betty knows what I’m looking for. yours, naomi
I’ve done a little investigating and there wasn’t a “bumpy” Encore yarn that we can locate around that time. There is a current yarn that may have the qualities you are searching for. On our website, check out Encore Boucle, it has a beautiful colorspun color range and that bumpiness & wash-ability you are looking for.
Congratulations to Betty and the Plymouth Yarn Company. There aren’t too many employers that can boast about such a long term employee and not too many employees that are loyal to one company.
I can tell you that Betty is not only loyal, she has a generous heart, helps those in need and has strong family ties. Growing up, I remember going to her house to play pinochle with her and my grandmother over an iced cold glass of tea. She loves dogs and has had many poodles and a yorkie terrier over the years.
Thanks to all the employees of Plymouth Yarn for the love and kindness you have shown to my Great Aunt over the past 45 years.
Keep going strong Aunt Betty! Only 5 more years and we can celebrate your 50th anniversary!
Love, Jacqueline
Way to go Betty!
